Huawei Reinforces Commitment to Environmental Protection with GeSI Membership

[Shenzhen, China, 13 November 2008] Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today announced its official entry into the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), the most influential environmental protection organization in the global Information and communication technology (ICT) industry.

As the only member from Asia in GeSI, Huawei will play a strategic role in driving environmental protection strategies, implementation measures, technical standards, and public policies that may affect the development of the global ICT industry with its peers in the communication industry.

"We deeply appreciate Huawei's commitments on environmental protection and also value the achievements Huawei has made in this field," said Mr Luis Neves, Chairman of the Board of GeSI and Head, Sustainability and Environment, Deutsche Telekom, upon welcoming Huawei into the organization. "As people around the world are becoming increasingly concerned about global warming and environmental problems, world-leading ICT companies like Huawei, by promoting green communication through the development of energy saving and emission-reduction technologies, will be fundamental to drive CO2 reductions globally."

"Huawei has always recognized the importance of environmental protection and taken an active role in advancing green technologies. This is well reflected through our active role in developing environmental protection standards and regulations for the industry, as well as through its development of energy-efficient products and solutions," said Xihui Shu, Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Department at Huawei. "By working closely with stakeholders across the value chain through GeSI, Huawei moves closer to achieving its goal of "Green Huawei, Green Communications, and a Green World"."

Huawei' s environmentally friendly Base Transceiver Station, for instance, is engineered to reduce equipment energy consumption by up to 30 percent and its small footprint takes up 40 percent less space in equipment rooms. Additionally, Huawei actively cooperates with operators on energy-saving and emission reduction projects. In 2007, Huawei signed a strategic cooperation agreement with China Mobile as a partner in its Green Action Plan and embarked on other green initiatives such as recyclable packaging,

Matt Walker, principal analyst at global advisory and consulting firm Ovum, and author of the report Surfing the green wave in telecom, commented that "Huawei is one of a number of vendors seriously attacking the problem of energy efficiency in telecom networks. Joining GeSI is a positive move for Huawei given its rising importance in Europe' s telecom industry."

Joe McGarvey, principal analyst from Current Analysis, said "Huawei has shown a long-term commitment to building a sustainable and environmentally friendly business. The thinking and resulting processes are embedded into all aspects of Huawei' s business."

About GeSI

Established in 2001, GeSI is an international organization aiming to promote energy saving and emission reduction in the ICT industry. As today's most influential non-governmental environmental protection organization in the ICT industry, GeSI coordinates environmental protection policies and implementation measures in the global ICT industry, exerts its influences on the formulation of environmental protection standards and regulations, and promotes the development of the cause of environmental protection in the communication industry. Currently, GeSI is made up of five workgroups: the Green Supply Chain Group, the Climate Group, the Green Material Group, the e-Waste Group, and the Public Policy Group. In the near future, a sixth workgroup – the Standardization Group will be set up in GeSI.
