T9 Nav
The next evolutionary step in mobile usability from the creators of T9 and XT9
T9 Nav is a new UI search and storage-based platform from Nuance, the makers of T9 Text Input. Nuance has drawn from its track record as the creator of predictive text input - a software already shipping in over 63 languages on over two billion phones - to make mobile search and content discovery simple, efficient, flexible and adaptable to the user.
Key Benefits
T9 Nav improves usability
As mobile phones get more complex, data storage capabilities are increasing. Additionally, the proliferation of phone features requires a robust retrieval system to access and manage content. Users are often confused about how to find and identify specific device features and mobile content to download. Traditional phone interfaces using hierarchical menu structures have reached their limit. A new solution is needed to facilitate quick access to the growing list of device features, content and applications.
T9 Nav allows users to search both on- and off-device. On-device search includes content such as address book entries, music files, ringtones and photos, as well as services such as phone settings and applications. Off-device search includes the individual user's content, settings and services, operator portal content and services and third-party content and services. Off device searches are facilitated by a server and plug-in that index off device items and then send that index to the device so it can be searched. The device then has links back to the off-device items.
Designed to complement a device's existing look and feel, T9 Nav doesn't change how the user interface or menu areas on the phone look or perform, but works alongside these elements and by placing all menu areas just a couple of clicks away from the idle screen. For example, typing "e-m" (i.e., "3-6") from the home screen of the phone can take the user directly to the email application, an Eminem ringtone, contact information for "Emily" or other device features, content or applications beginning with those letters. T9 Nav adapts to user behavior over time to provide customized search results based on frequently accessed features and content.
T9 Nav enhances discoverability
Limited screen real estate on most mobile devices prevents the discoverability of unexposed features, while complex menu structures present a roadblock to discoverability of operator content and applications.
T9 Nav opens up the mobile web with an instant access to everything approach that will drive mobile data use and services uptake. For example, a user looking for a ringtone on the device might also receive search results for a music download service. If they aren't already subscribed to this service, a customized operator message can pop up with instructions on how to subscribe. T9 Nav not only simplifies navigation, it learns with the user to present operators with additional revenue opportunities around the cross-sell and up-sell of content and services users store on their phone or access frequently.
T9 Nav provides extensive language support
T9 Nav leverages Nuance's experience in linguistics and language databases. Additionally, it leverages T9 Text Input technology, providing support for search with multi-language capabilities. All of the languages supported by T9 are available upon request.
