Taiwan market: Mobile Internet-access increases by over 186% in January-November 2008
Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) on December 19 released latest statistics on the number of 3G and 3.5G data cards being used for mobile access to the Internet. As of the end of November 2008, 300,618 cards were in use, increasing by 186.4% from the 104,960 at the end of 2007.
The fast growth was mainly because four of Taiwan's mobile communication service operators have being actively promoting 3.5G data card subscriptions by offering various price schemes and discounts since mid-2008. Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) is currently the largest provider of 3G/3.5G mobile Internet-access services with over 120,000 subscribers, followed by Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) with nearly 110,000, Taiwan Mobile (TWM) with more than 70,000 and Vibo Telecom with over 10,000, according to industry sources.
