Cypress reportedly to supply touch solutions for Palm Pre

Cypress Semiconductor has reportedly become the sole supplier of touch panel solutions for the Palm Pre, while 2009 will see more players competing in the touch panel market, market sources have indicated. The new Palm Pre handset, unveiled at CES 2009, has been speculated to debut in the UK via Vodafone.

After Apple introduced iPhone two years ago, multi-touch solutions have become growingly popular in high-end handsets. The sources noted that iPhone's touch panel solutions combine the technologies of Texas Instruments (TI), NXP Semiconductors and Broadcom.

Others have adopted nulti-touch solutions from Synaptics and Elan Microelectronics. Synaptics has been supplier for Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics (LGE), High Tech Computer (HTC), Google phone and Research In Motion (RIM)'s BlackBerry. Elan focuses on local handset brands in Taiwan and China, the sources noted.

In addition to Cypress, Qualcomm, TI, STMicroelectronics, Infineon, MediaTeka and Micro-Star International (MSI) also have developed their own touch panel solutions, the sources said.

Other Taiwan IC design houses, such as Weltrend Semiconductor, Holtek Semiconductor, Himark Technology, Pixart Imaging and Ene Technology, will also launch touch panel solutions this year, the sources added.

The fierce competition in global touch panel market is expected to drive down the prices of related chips and modules, added the sources.
