Linux-based platforms likely to undergo fast consolidation, says Wind River executive
The varied commercial Mobile Linux platforms, now with active involvement from the OHA (Open Handset Alliance) and LiMo Foundation, are likely to undergo a consolidation process through which two or three standard mobile Linux platforms will dominate the market by 2012-2013, according to Richard Lee, country manager, Wind River Taiwan.
There are more than 25 companies developing Linux-based application platforms and interface software, and the number of independent software vendors (ISVs) for Linux systems totals more than 100, Lee noted.
Citing data from the ABI Research, Strategic Analysys and others, Lee said that Linux-based mobile phones are expected to grow by a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 44-70% in the next few years, with a prospect to reach 130-200 million units accounting for 25% of the global smartphone market by 2012.
In particular, the market for Android-powered handsets is expected to top 97 million units by 2012, Lee added.
