Lunar New Year bringing rush orders for handset chips for the China market

Foundry players and packaging and testing houses are receiving rush orders mainly concentrated on handset chips amid demand for the Lunar New Year at the end of January, according to market sources.

The sources indicated that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) received handset chip rush orders from Qualcomm and MediaTek, and graphic chip orders from Nvidia, while Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) benefited from handset chip orders, as Datang Telecom Technology and China Mobile are gearing up for the TD-SCDMA market. Datang Telecom is a major shareholder of the SMIC, the sources noted.

Packaging and testing houses also confirmed they received handset chip rush orders. Players indicated that handset chip rush orders from China started at the end of 2008 due to the Lunar New Year, but with the Lunar New Year approaching in two weeks, the rush orders have slowed down. In addition, packaging and testing houses do not expect the rush orders to have much affect on their January revenues, the sources noted.

Packaging and testing houses indicated that orders will not increase until March, with clients expected to reduce orders to adjust inventories after the Luna New Year, demand for packaging and testing is expected to remain low in February.
