Pedestrian navigation, Discover Cities data & technical info: Compliments of NAVTEQ
NN4D has provided the information and documents below to help you create LBS applications for pedestrians featuring their Discover Cities product. Please note: access to the download links below requires membership of NN4D.

In NAVTEQ's experience, the city guide is one of the most popular personal navigation application categories. This type of application supports pedestrians with tourist, business or shopping information. As well as information about city locations, the application informs an end-user, who is unfamiliar with the city, how to navigate.
In contrast to the traditional navigation, pedestrian navigation provides guidance to explore the surroundings by foot. Therefore, it is necessary to include pedestrian related attributes and contents into the map data. A number of characteristics provide a better insight into the end-user behavior and needs: pedestrian freedom of movement, pedestrian locations, and indoor and outdoor navigation.
Discover Cities is a product from NAVTEQ that includes pedestrian related attributes and content. NN4D offers sample data of Discover Cities for development with sample data currently covering Chicago, Bay Area, New York City, Munich, Paris, Barcelona, Las Vegas, Seattle and Singapore.
Here are two technical articles which are platform, language and device agnostic. To access the articles, you need to be a logged-in member of NN4D:

1. Overview of use cases for pedestrian applications - Can the Digital Road Network Put the Pedestrian on the Map? This article provides an overview of the product ideas for a pedestrian navigation product.

2. Introduction to the pedestrian data available in Discover Cities - Discover Cities Enables Pedestrian-Orientated Applications. Since NAVTEQ unveiled the Discover Cities product in Q4 2007, it has drawn a great attention from the developer community in the LBS space. To understand this phenomenon we need to understand Discover Cities, the product's capabilities, and how it enables application developers and device manufacturers to address the need for LBS applications beyond navigation.
