Government ministry hopes Chunghwa Telecom can take over failing 3G service provider

Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), the largest shareholder in Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), hopes CHT can take over the operation of Asia Pacific Broadband Telecom (APBT), one of the five 3G mobile telecom carriers in Taiwan, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

However, CHT chairman Shyue-ching Lu thinks it is still too early to determine whether CHT will take over the company, the sources said.

Taiwan-based Teco Group is currently the acting operator of APBT, but has expressed unwillingness to operate the telecom business on a regular basis and is therefore seeking new investors and/or an operator, the sources noted.
