Inventec Appliances to push sales of CDMA handsets in China

Inventec Appliances aims to push sales of its own-brand CDMA handsets in China in order to make up losses caused by declining PHS subscribers resulting from the launch of 3G services, according to company sources.

China Telecom, the CDMA service provider in China, has said that it aims to increase the number of its subscribers by 30 million this year, including 10 million 3G subscribers. The company currently has a total of over 30 million subscribers, according to company data.

Inventec has entered the supply chain of CDMA handsets for China Telecom, starting to ship the CDMA handsets to the carrier since the fourth quarter of 2008, said the company source.

Inventec is expected to ship 1-2 million CDMA handsets in China in 2009, and together with PHS and other models the company's total handset shipments for this year are expected to top 10 million units, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report citing company sources.

EDN also cited data from China-based CCID Consulting as indicating that Inventec is currently one of the top-10 CDMA handset vendors in China with a 2% share. Samsung Electronics is the top CDMA handset vendor with a 33% share, followed by ZTE with 18.4% and Huawei Technologies with 18.2%.

In other news, Inventec reported net profits of NT$2.19 billion (US$65.6 million), or NT$4.29 per share, for its 2008 operations. The company's consolidated gross margins stood at 10.57% in 2008, improving slightly from 10.3% in 2007, the company said.
