Motorola Extends Cable Modem Leadership With New Line Of Wireless Home Networking Gateways
Motorola SURFboard® cable and digital voice modems add user-friendly Wi-Fi® home networking and service assurance features
HORSHAM, Pa. – March 30, 2009 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the launch of four new SURFboard gateways with integrated networking capabilities. Standards-based and remotely manageable, the new gateways help cable operators accelerate the delivery of personal media experiences to their subscribers by making broadband available throughout the home with one easy-to-install and easy-to-manage device. SURFboard cable modem wireless gateways (models SBG901 and SBG941) are a DOCSIS 2.0 cable data modem and integrated gateway in one, while the SURFboard wireless voice gateways (models SVG1501 and SVG2501) include the additional functionality of a digital voice modem.
Motorola, the leading worldwide provider of DOCSIS® products, helps cable operators support the Wi-Fi home network by offering a complete solution that combines its new line of SURFboard integrated gateways with consumer self-installation accessories and service assurance software:
Customer Self-Installation – The Motorola whole home connectivity accessories bundle (model TER/GUSB2xx) includes a gateway device and a self-install wireless USB adapter that provides a simple, auto-start installation procedure for the consumer. The installation does not require a CD, thereby reducing cable operator expenses through the elimination of truck rolls.
Service Assurance Software – Motorola’s field-proven NBBS remote device management solution is a scalable, carrier-grade software platform that enables cable operators to remotely access, configure, monitor and troubleshoot their full portfolio of consumer devices, home networks and services. The software reduces support costs while improving provisioning accuracy and increasing customer satisfaction.
“As consumers demand more wireless services, cable providers are looking for integrated solutions that combine traditional high speed data, IP-telephony and secure home networking with unparalleled service assurance,” said Alan Lefkof, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola Broadband Home Gateways and Software. “The new Motorola SURFboard integrated gateways demonstrate Motorola’s commitment to deliver a high-value, lower cost of ownership solution in one convenient and reliable package.”
Motorola’s integrated SURFboard gateways are equipped with a built-in, easy-to-use Motorola Wi-Fi installation wizard — a ‘zero-touch’ auto Wi-Fi provisioning tool — which seamlessly configures a secure Wi-Fi connection on a user’s machine. When the Wi-Fi wizard is finished, a secure WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) encrypted wireless connection is established to the gateway, protecting the user's machine from hacker attacks. Motorola’s embedded software enables Wi-Fi deployments with high levels of quality, reliability and customer satisfaction with low MSO operational and support costs. The gateways enable the delivery of a wide variety of high-value broadband services in a single compact unit. The new models include a built-in firewall with Stateful Packet Inspection, intrusion detection and Denial of Service attack prevention to protect users from hacker attacks.
SBG901 – Features an industry-leading DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem, an IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless access point, and an advanced firewall in one compact solution for the residential or SOHO subscriber who wants the convenience of wireless, high-speed data service and the security of a commercial-grade firewall.
SBG941 – Adds an integrated four-port switch with 10/100 Base-T Ethernet to the feature set of the SBG901.
SVG1501 – Combines the functionality of a DOCSIS 2.0 cable modem, embedded Multimedia Terminal Adapter (eMTA), four-port 10/100 Base-T Ethernet router, an advanced firewall, and an IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless access point. The sleek, stylish SVG1501 is for the advanced residential or SOHO consumer who desires the delivery of up to two lines of full-featured telephone service (e.g., caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling, etc.), high-speed data services and an optimized wireless experience.
SVG2501 – Adds a field-replaceable integrated Lithium-ion battery back-up to the SVG1501 for additional peace of mind in case of a power outage.
Motorola’s new SURFboard platform is also environmentally friendly, helping service providers lower their carbon footprint and minimize their impact on the environment. Motorola designed its next generation SURFboard portfolio of CPE to comply with international environmental and energy-efficient standards. The portfolio uses ENERGY STAR qualified power supplies, and its devices and power supplies are compliant with European Code of Conduct regulations. In addition, its lead-free circuit boards are RoHS compliant.
