AT&T Launches 'Apps Beta' Program to Advance Innovations in Applications, Issues Open Call to Developers

AT&T Apps Beta Lets Customers Try Applications Prior to Widespread Availability, Gives Developers Direct Access to Consumer Feedback

AT&T Invites Interested Developers to Submit Apps

AT&T* (NYSE:T) today announced the launch of AT&T Apps Beta (www.att.com/appsbeta), a new initiative that gives developers the chance to test applications with AT&T customers and receive direct consumer feedback before making their applications broadly available.

AT&T Apps Beta is the first program of its kind among U.S. carriers, underscoring the company's commitment to lead the industry in openness and innovation.

"Our goal is to deepen the dialogue with developers and give customers a chance to tell us what works and what doesn't," said David Christopher, chief marketing officer for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. "We hope that by facilitating this level of collaboration between the developer community and early adopters, we'll see even more innovation as developers gain valuable customer insights that will ultimately benefit their long-term application development and marketing strategies."

AT&T is accepting applications from developers beginning today. Developers can go to www.att.com/appsbeta for an overview of the program and complete list of requirements for participation.

Through AT&T Apps Beta, developers can incubate their ideas with AT&T customers and get direct access to feedback such as apps ratings, feature suggestions and bugs. An interactive community forum aggregates user-generated content, and offers tag clouds to indicate the most active discussions around various applications. A typical trial period will last roughly four to six weeks. Additionally, developers can use AT&T Apps Beta to get targeted user input for applications they may have already launched broadly.

AT&T plans to use consumer feedback from Apps Beta to help improve its applications portfolio as well as inform its go-to-market activities for applications. For example, apps that are particularly well-received may be made available to all AT&T customers through AT&T's content and multimedia storefront, AT&T MEdia Mall, and could receive additional promotional support or featured placement in customer-facing channels.

AT&T customers with compatible handsets can download applications for trial at no cost beginning today. AT&T plans to market the program to AT&T customers in the coming weeks. An unlimited data plan is required for customers who wish to participate.

Focus on Innovation
AT&T Apps Beta reflects the company's continued focus on innovation in applications, a commitment that has included ongoing collaboration with third party developers as well as strategic investments in AT&T-developed applications.

For the fourth consecutive year, AT&T hosted its Fast-Pitch Platinum Awards contest, designed to identify the country's most innovative wireless applications, at CTIA Wireless. Developers of the best applications, content, and enterprise solutions will be rewarded with cash prizes, the opportunity to go-to-market with AT&T. The company awards a total of $70,000 in cash prizes through the program.

AT&T now has more than 20,000 developers registered in its devCentral developer relations program (http://developer.att.com), which launched in 2002 and was the first program of its kind by a major carrier.

AT&T collaborates with developers to create applications and content for all of the world's major mobile operating systems, including BlackBerry, iPhone, Microsoft Windows Mobile, Java, Palm OS and Symbian. AT&T also publishes its Wireless Reference Architecture Guide through the devCentral portal, giving developers access to information on topics such as wireless network security, wireless network technology and emerging trends, wireless gateways, and the wireless application protocol (WAP) environment, among other topics.

AT&T has also used in-house resources to develop cutting-edge applications for AT&T U-verseSM TV and YELLOWPAGES.COM.
