Taiwan market: Handset sales to contract 8-9% in 2009, says IDC Taiwan
The Taiwan handset market is likely to contract 8-9% in 2009, widening from a mere 1% contraction in 2008, according to an estimate of market research firm IDC Taiwan.
However, sales of smartphones in the Taiwan market are expected to stay flat in 2009 following a strong growth in 2008 that pushed the ratio of smartphones to the entire handset market in Taiwan to over 10% in the fourth quarter of last year, said IDC Taiwan.
Branded handset vendors shipped 1.76 million handsets to their sales agents in Taiwan in the fourth quarter of 2008, up 1% sequentially and up 2% on year, noted the research firm.
The fourth-quarter smartphone shipments from branded vendors were up 16% on quarter and up 13% on year, thanks to price cuts by vendors and strong support from carriers, IDC Taiwan said.
The ratio of 3G handsets sold in the Taiwan market is expected to further climb to 60% in 2009 after reaching 50% at the end of 2008, IDC Taiwan estimated.
