Vee Telecom and Global Mobile sign WiMAX cooperation pacts with Clearwire
Two Taiwan-based WiMAX licensees Vee Telecom Multimedia (formerly Vastar Cable TV System) and Global Mobile have signed cooperation agreements with US-based WiMAX operator Clearwire.
Both agreements call for cooperation on international roaming services, technological development and content applications, according to joint statements released at the signing ceremonies.
Vee Telecom is looking to gain expertise in system integration and content application services from Clearwire so as to shorten its time to market, said company chairman Richard Lai.
Vee Telecom was also in talks to source technologies from Clearwire in exchange for a stake in Vee Telecom, Lai noted.
Vee Telecom is scheduled to start its commercial WiMAX operations in Taichung starting October and aims to secure 100,000 subscribers by April 2010, according to company sources.
Meanwhile, Global Mobile is expected to kick off commercial operations in the second half of the year, company chairperson Rosemary Ho said after signing the pact with Clearwire.
Clearwire will is also likely to be a cooperation partner when Global Mobile launches its planned capital expansion project in 2010, noted Ho, who also indicated that Global Mobile is looking forward to attracting one million WiMAX subscribers in a five-year period.
