Verizon's and Motorola's First Phone Running Google's Android Will Be...
The Motorola Calgary will supposedly be not only Motorola's first device running Android, but also the first phone running this new operating system to be released by Verizon Wireless.
As this device has not yet been announced, details are very sketchy, and basically all that's known is what can be inferred from a leaked image (at right). This shows that the Calgary will have a sliding screen in front of a QWERTY keyboard.
While it's safe to say this device will have Verizon's mobile broadband service, and will likely have Bluetooth and GPS support, there's currently no way to know if it will have other features, like Wi-Fi.
Android Inside
This image includes a home screen that looks nothing like the standard Android one. At this point it's not known if the device will ship this way, or if this home screen is inaccurate.
If the Calgary really is based on Android, it will have a highly-functional web browser, and includes tie-ins to a number of this company's online services, like Gmail and Google Maps. There is also a rapidly growing collection of third-party software available for this operating system.
Corroborating Evidence
This isn't the first indication to emerge that Verizon is interested in Android. The company recently began trying to hire at least one programmer to create voicemail applications and other software for this platform.
For its part, Motorola has made no secret of its strong interest in Google's operating system. It announced last fall that going forward its flagship phones will run Android.
Coming When?
According to unconfirmed reports, the Motorola Calgary has been scheduled for release in 2009, and it could be out as early as the second quarter of this year.
There is no word on pricing.
