Verizon May be Getting on the Android Bandwagon
Strong evidence has emerged to indicate Verizon Wireless is going to release a phone running Google's Android operating system.
So far this carrier has shown little interest in Google's efforts to bring Linux to mobile devices. It's even a member of the rival LiMo Foundation, which is working on its own Linux-based operating system for phones.
But this may be changing. Verizon has posted a job opening for an on its website.
This position is for someone who will be "responsible for end to end delivery of innovative java based mobile applications on existing or pre-commercial handsets with an initial focus on voicemail applications." All Android applications are written in Java.
Up Against the Competition
Although Verizon has so far stayed out of the Android-based phone business, two of its rivals are jumping in with both feet.
T-Mobile USA released the very first device running this operating system last year. The T-Mobile is supposedly going to be followed up by at least two more this year: the HTC Magic and the Samsung I7500.
Sprint has released an Android-based phone yet, but Samsung says it is prepping one for this carrier that's expected to debut during the fourth quarter of this year.
That leaves AT&T as the only one of the top-tier U.S. phone companies that isn't showing any signs of interest in Google's OS. This isn't surprising though, as it is the exclusive provider of Apple's iPhone, which is seen as Android's top rival.
