China market: Nokia unveils 11 new handsets for emerging 3G segment
Nokia unveiled a total of 11 new handsets in the China market recently. The new lineup includes nine WCDMA-enabled models and one CDMA EVDO-enabled handset, cashing in on the increasing demand for 3G models.
While subcontracting the production of WCDMA-enabled handsets to EMS firms on an OEM basis, Nokia outsources the production of the CDMA EVDO handset, the Nokia 8208, to Foxconn International Holdings (FIH) on an ODM basis, according to market sources.
The Nokia 5530 XPressMusic is the only 2G handset among the 11 introduced, but it is the first handset ever launched by Nokia in the China market that comes with built-in WLAN connectivity.
In addition to WCDMA and CDMA EVDO models, Nokia is also cooperating with chipset solution vendors to develop TD-SCDMA-enabled handsets for the China market, according to sources at Nokia Greater China.
