Gemtek expects WiMAX shipments to see strong growth from 3Q09

Network equipment maker Gemtek Technology expects its WiMAX equipment shipments will start picking up in the third quarter, and the company still expects to hit its guidance of one million shipments this year despite having shipments of only 200,000 units in the first half of the year, according to Longsong Lin, the company CEO.

Volume shipments of Intel-based WiMAX notebook are expected to start in the third quarter this year. Wu believes that from the third quarter this year to the end of 2010, there will be a major growth spurt for the WiMAX industry.

Wu pointed out that in the past, when Intel began adopting WLAN into its notebooks, it successfully increased the penetration of WLAN from only 10% to over 90% and Wu believes the same experience will also happen in the WiMAX market.

In addition to WiMAX modules for notebook, Gemtek's WiMAX cards and WiMAX customer premise equipment (CPE) shipments will also start to see a significant boost in the third quarter, said Wu, while adding that the company's current telecom clients are mostly from emerging markets.
