Icon Private Equity will invest $ 200 million in the creation of a federal operator of WiMax
Today, at the XIII Petersburg International Economic Forum President of Icon Private Equity Kirill Dmitriev announced the creation of a federal operator of the mobile broadband Internet-based fourth-generation WiMax technology in Russia.
In his speech at the round table «Innovation policy as a basis for anti-crisis program Russia» Kirill Dmitriev noted that the project has a very high importance for innovative development of Russia: «During 2009 we plan to invest in the development of the operator $ 200 million Russia has already achieved significant success in the development of Internet penetration, and our project aims at further strengthening the Internet infrastructure. We focus on regions where there is greatest need for quality fast internet. Today the Russian government taking unprecedented measures to stimulate investment in innovative industries, and creates favorable conditions for the inflow of money into the economy ».
Reportedly, the operator is focused on regions of Russia with a low penetration of broadband access. During 2009, 4G-network under the brand Freshtel will be deployed in 11 regions in Central and Southern federal districts of Russia. The new network will consist of 2 thousand base stations operating at a frequency of 3.5 MHz, and will cover 20 million subscribers. Supplier of equipment will make the company Huawei.
The head of the company appointed Sergey Avdeev, former senior vice president of OAO «VimpelCom».
