Nokia to launch first TD-SCDMA smartphone for China market by year-end 2009

Nokia plans to launch its first TD-SCDMA-enabled smartphone targeting the high-end segment of China's handset market by the end of 2009, according to Deng Yuanjun, corporate senior vice president and vice president of Nokia Greater China.

Nokia launched a total of 11 new handsets for the China market in mid-June, including nine WCDMA-enabled models and one CDMA EVDO-enabled handset but none of them were TD-SCDMA models.

The bankruptcy of Nokia's previous China-based TD-SCDMA solution partner, Commit, last year has forced Nokia to locate a new partner, Deng explained.

However, the planned launch of Nokia's first TD-SCDMA handset is still within the target schedule, Deng stated, adding that Nokia definitely will launch a comprehensive lineup of TD-SCDMA phones for varied segments.

Overall, Nokia is currently the number-one handset vendor in China accounting for more than 30% share, according to market data.
