Skymedi supplies eMMC for HTC, Nokia and Garmin, sources say
Taiwan's Skymedi, a memory controller IC maker, has recently cut into the supply chains of High Tech Computer (HTC), Nokia and Garmin with its eMMC products, according to industry sources.
Skymedi declined to comment on customers' status, but said it has partnered with NAND flash vendors to co-develop managed-NAND solutions based on the eMMC specification for handsets and outdoor navigators. The company expects the adoption of eMMC solutions will expand to cover PC applications in the future.
Citing market research firm iSuppli, Skymedi said that NAND-flash use in multi-chip packages (MCPs) for mobile handsets is expected to exceed 50% in 2008, and will grow further to 85% in 2010.
In other news, rival Phison Electronics recently announced its collaboration with NAND flash chipmakers to jointly develop controllers for NAND solutions based on the newly-released JEDEC eMMC 4.4 industry specification, with products available by the end of 2009.
