Taiwan makers to benefit from large demand for WLAN APs from telecom carriers in China
China-based mobile 3G operators China Telecom and China Mobile both plan to purchase large volume of WLAN access points (APs) for their respective deployments of WLAN hot-spot networks - a move which is likely to benefit Taiwan-based network equipment suppliers, according to Taiwan industry sources.
China Telecom will invest five billion yuan (US$730 million) to deploy WLAN hot-spot networks around China and plans to select access point (AP) suppliers in the third quarter, said the sources, noting that volume shipments of WLAN APs will begin in 2010.
Meanwhile, China Mobile plans to procure 110,000 WLAN APs in July for the installation of public wireless networks in major airports and tourist hotels in China, the sources added.
Many Taiwan-based makers are poised to compete for orders through open bidding in cooperation with system integration providers or through outsourced orders from large China-based makers such as ZTE and Huawei Technologies, the sources said.
Major Taiwan network equipment suppliers, including Gemtek Technology, Accton Technology and Asustek Computer, are preparing to enter the competition for the WLAN AP orders, the sources revealed.
