Taiwan WiMAX licensee Vee Telecom to start trial operations in September
Taiwan-based Vee Telecom Multimedia will launch WiMAX services on a trial basis in central Taiwan in September, with official launch set in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to company chairman Richard Lai.
Vee aims to attract one million WiMAX subscribers eventually, Lai stated.
Vee expects to purchase WiMAX COE (central office equipment) and CPE (customer premise equipment) worth over NT$3 million (US$92 million) in the next two years, with Motorola to be a major COE supplier, mainly WiMAX base stations, in the initial phase.
Meanwhile, Vee signed an agreement on June 14 to join Clearwire's global alliance partner program under which the US-based WiMAX operator will furnish Vee with consultant services pertaining to network infrastructure, selection of WiMAX equipment suppliers, testing and certification, and service platform build-ups, according to Vee.
A total of six WiMAX operators worldwide, including Vee and Taiwan-based Global Mobile, have joined Clearwire's global alliance partner program, according to Ali Tabassi, Clearwire's senior vice president.
