Chunghwa Telecom holds GPON compatibility testing

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) in cooperation with Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and the government-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) held a GPON (Gigabit-capable passive optical network) compatibility testing event on July 13, aimed at helping Taiwan makers develop GPON technologies, according to CHT.

Testing will continue through July 18, with five international OLT (optical line terminal) suppliers and 11 Taiwan-based ONU (optical network unit) makers invited to participate.

The five OLT suppliers are Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, Ericsson, ECI and Adtran, while Taiwan ONU makers include D-Link, Accton Technology, Alpha Networks, Zyxel Communications, Tecom, Delta Networks, Tainet Communication System, Tailyn Communication, Comtrend and Askey Computer.

CHT is expected to release volume orders for GPON equipment and devices in 2010, and the compatibility testing will be crucial for securing CHT's forthcoming GPON orders, contended sources at Taiwan network equipment makers.

CHT currently has a total of 1.3 million FTTH subscribers and expects the number to top 1.8 million by the end of 2009, according to previous reports.
