Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), Taiwan Mobile (TWM) and Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) on July 8 signed with Yahoo! for cooperation to offer electronic billing (e-billing) service via Yahoo!-verified e-mail, according to the carriers.
The three major telecom companies in Taiwan have a total of 35 million subscribers, of which only about 10% use electronic billing, industry sources said. Based on two sheets of paper for a monthly bill per subscriber on average, the three companies use as many as 756 million sheets of paper a year, accounting for 58.6% of all paper billing sent in Taiwan, the sources indicated.
CHT has two million subscribers using electronic billing currently, and expects to increase the number to three million by the end of 2009, according to the company.
Yahoo! had 20 million electronic billing e-mail accounts in Taiwan in May 2009, three times the volume a year earlier, according to Yahoo! Kimo (Yahoo! Taiwan).
