Intel poised to make mobile move
The company could join forces with Nokia to rival Android
Intel is customising its new chip platform, ‘Moorestown’, for use on mobile phones as it looks to take a slice of the handset chip market.
The company is now keen to join forces with the world’s number one manufacturer, Nokia, on a Linux-based operating system.
Intel’s platforms had previously been too power-hungry for handsets, when compared with rival company ARM’s system.
The mobile platform, code-named ‘Moorestown’, is due out in 2010. Another mobile-based platform, codenamed ‘Medfield’, is due out in 2011.
In June, Intel unveiled a technology partnership with Nokia on mobile devices that would give it the chance to take on chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm.
Intel is expected to introduce new features for its Moblin operating system at its Developer’s Forum next week. It is thought that it may announce plans to merge its Linux-based operating system with Nokia’s, allowing the two companies to compete with Android.
