China market: STB provider Coship steps into 3G handset market, to enter netbook segment in 2010

China-based set-top box (STB) provider Shenzhen Coship Electronics has stepped into the production of 3G CDMA handsets and also plans to enter the netbook segment in 2010, according to market sources.

The company first 3G CDMA EV-DO-enabled handset, the E89, is built on Qualcomm's CDMA platform and runs Windows Mobile 6. The E89 also features GPS functionality co-developed by Coship and SK Telecom (SKT).

Coship plans to roll out five 3G-enabled devices, including handsets and netbooks, in 2010 and aims to sell 2-3 million 3G terminal-end products within two years, said the sources.
