TelEm Group subscribers to enjoy superior data services
Operator selects Nokia Siemens Networks’ optical transport solution for higher capacity and scalability to meet customers’ needs.
TelEm Group’s international telephony and broadband provider, Smitcoms N.V.—a leading telecommunications services provider in the Netherlands Antilles with its headquarters on the Dutch Caribbean island of St Maarten—will soon be able to offer advanced data services at high speeds to its business and residential subscribers. The operator has selected Nokia Siemens Networks’ solutions to deploy a new undersea optical cable route between St Maarten and Puerto Rico.
“Demand for bandwidth continues to increase throughout the Caribbean, so SMITCOMS, an affiliate of the TelEm Group, needs to upgrade its present SMPR-1 undersea cable system to ensure we can meet our customers’ needs,” said Eldert Louisa, CTO of the TelEm Group. “When deployed, the system will meet current market demands and easily upgrade as demand for data and other services increases.”
Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its hiT 7300 DWDM long-haul platform to help SMITCOMS securely and cost-efficiently manage the high data traffic volumes required by its customers. The platform is upgradeable to 40Gb per wavelength to meet future needs of the telecoms services provider. Nokia Siemens Networks also will provide its TNMS network management system to optimize the network operations through centralized control and supervision, along with implementation services to support the deployment.
“SMITCOMS has a very scalable transport backbone that can securely and cost-efficiently accommodate the high traffic volumes required by its carrier customers. The newly deployed system can handle 40G pipes and can be upgraded to allow continuous growth as demand continues to increase,” said Michael Jakob, Head of Fixed Networks Business Development, Caribbean, Nokia Siemens Networks.
Deliveries of the DWDM platform will begin in November and the system is expected to be taken into use by end of January 2010.
