Intrinsyc Leads System Integration of Barnes & Noble nook eBook Reader
Intrinsyc accelerates breakthrough Android-based eBook reader to market.
Vancouver, BC – Intrinsyc Software International, Inc. (TSX: ICS), a leading provider of software solutions for mobile devices, announced its Device Development Solutions group led the systems integration of the nook eBook reader recently announced by Barnes & Noble.com www.bn.com, a wholly owned subsidiary of Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE:BKS). The revolutionary nook, based on the Android operating system, breaks new ground in its product category with innovative technology and sleek minimalist design with access to the company’s digital store of over one million eBooks, newspapers and magazines.
Intrinsyc provided both proprietary software and engineering services to build the Android based platform software, and assisted with application development. Intrinsyc enhanced the Android operating system functionality by creating a software platform that abstracted the hardware from the applications allowing the application development team to build feature-rich applications running across nook’s unique dual screen design.
The use of Intrinsyc’s RapidRIL, Connection Manager, Power Optimizer, Telephony Test Suite and Remote Device Updater technology were key components that reduced development time and ensured delivery of a high quality product.
RapidRIL™, allows developers of smart, connected devices to accelerate Radio Interface Layer (RIL) development with out-of-the-box modem support, reducing development time from months to weeks. RapidRIL supports multiple modems and both Windows and Android operating systems. RapidRIL for Android was utilized to accelerate development time and ensure high quality and efficient wireless connectivity.
Intrinsyc tailored Power Optimizer and Connection Manager software to provide the nook with a unique 3G / WiFi hand-over and power management scheme, providing least cost routing with radio power optimization for long battery life.
The Intrinsyc Telephony Test Suite is the only commercially available automated test suite available for Android-based devices. The use of Telephony Test Suite was instrumental in uncovering issues and resolving them early in the development process ensuring high quality wireless connectivity.
Intrinsyc used Remote Device Updater to provide remote updates of the entire software platform to allow developers working across multiple regions to have the latest software build and enable Barnes & Noble to meet its project schedule. Remote Device Updater may also be used to provide feature enhancements to consumers’ device after purchase.
“Intrinsyc demonstrated tremendous dedication to the project's success from our first meeting. They listened to understand our needs, providing consultation throughout the project to improve the product and the development process,” said Tony Astarita, Vice President, Digital Products, Barnes & Noble. “Intrinsyc brought a combination of software technology, engineering expertise, and program management that is best in class. This enabled us to make nook a truly breakthrough product. We were pleased to work with a company that kept its commitments every step of the way.”
“We were all on the same team - when obstacles arose, we communicated well and collaborated to resolve every issue,” said David Manuel, Vice President and General Manager of Device Development Solutions, Intrinsyc. “Our passion is to enable our customer’s innovation and differentiation. We are proud of our involvement in building the most innovative eBook reader on the market.
With engineers in Canada, China, and the United States, Intrinsyc deployed around the clock resources on the project. The Intrinsyc development resources in Asia played an important role in the success of this project since they were able to work with the hardware ODM located in the same time zone. The Intrinsyc program managers worked closely with members of the Barnes & Noble product development team and maintained responsive communication to solve technical issues in hours rather than days.
The nook features many industry firsts, as it is the first Android-based eBook reader and the first to offer a color touch screen for navigation along with a best-in-class eInk display for an immersive, enjoyable e-reading experience. For fast connectivity, nook is the first eBook reader to provide, at no additional costs to customers, both 3G wireless access on AT&T’s mobile broadband network and access to WiFi for Barnes & Noble in-store browsing and enjoyment. The nook is the first eBook reader to offer digital lending for a wide selection of eBooks.
