iPhone overtakes Windows Mobile's US share in October
Active iPhone users outnumber Win Mobile.
The number of active iPhone users in the US has passed that of Windows Mobile for the first time, new data from comScore shows. After just pulling even with Microsoft in July, Apple's smartphone platform jumped to an average of 8.97 million current users in October, well ahead of Microsoft's 7.13 million. The iPhone has regularly had higher market share now has also surpassed Windows Mobile devices in its actual user base.
Among smartphones, the iPhone is still second to RIM's BlackBerry, which has about 14.96 million users. Palm's introduction of the Pre has kept its active population growing to about 2.84 million, while Android and Symbian are growing but trail behind at 1.02 million and 1.3 million users each.
The reversal is attributed directly to the launch of the iPhone 3GS just before the start of the three-month span but reflects a rapidly accelerating usage curve for both Apple and RIM where most others are seeing much more modest growth. Windows Mobile in comparison has seen relatively stagnant share as its user base is similar to what it was in May.
