Radiation warning over mobile phones used by children
CHILDREN'S Christmas must-have mobile phones could be damaging their health, campaigners claim.
They say radiation levels are swelling and some of the most coveted state-of-the-art phones are emitting amounts unseen since the early "bricks" of the 1980s.
New figures show a huge variation, with some phones emitting three times as much radiation as others.
And the campaigners say there are concerns about the number of children being given mobiles for Christmas because their thinner skulls and smaller heads make them twice as sensitive to radiation.
Olga Naidenko, of the pressure group Environmental Working Group, said: "A lot of new-generation mobiles are pushing it to the limit."
The new figures come in a table showing the specific absorption rates - radiation absorbed by the body measured in watts per kg - for Britain's top 20 mobiles.
Graham Phi lips, of mobile phone campaigners Powerwatch, said: "For most people, this table will be the first way to compare radiation from these phones."
The £400 Sony Ericsson Satio has the highest level at 1.59W.
Britain's top-selling phone - the Nokia 5800 - is in the middle range, along with the popular iPhone.
The Mobile Operators' Associat ion said yesterday more than 30 independent reviews had found no evidence that mobile phones caused ill health.
