China market: Handset production reaches 600 million units in 2009, says paper
Production of handsets, excluding gray market models, totaled 600 million units in China in 2009, an increase of 7% from 2008, the Chinese-language Commercial Times quoted data released by China-based All View Consulting (AVC) as indicating.
Production of gray market handsets totaled 145 million units in 2009, up 142% from 60 million units in 2008, AVE data showed. The consulting firm also expects production of gray market handsets to start declining in 2010.
Total sales of handsets in the China market reached 168 million units in 2009 and are expected to top 185 million units in 2010, AVE projected. In 2009, sales of international branded models accounted for 69% of the China market and the domestic brands took the remaining 31%.
