Motorola: Droid, Cliq Getting Updates

LAS VEGAS—Motorola is aware of the Motorola Droid and CLIQ's weaknesses, and the two phones will get updates to fix some of their flaws, Motorola chief executive Sanjay Jha said at the CES trade show on Wednesday.

The Droid and CLIQ, both of which run the Google Android operating system, are both top-rated phones. But they've both been criticized. The Droid's keyboard is pretty poor, and the Cliq has had trouble with battery life.

"On the CLIQ we're still working on battery life, but I think we've improved the battery life of that device pretty meaningfully," Jha said.

A new version of the Droid will have an improved keyboard, Jha said, though that will obviously need new hardware.

Both existing phones will get the latest version of Android 2.1, which was introduced with the Google Nexus One phone, Jha said. He didn't give a time frame for the upgrades, however , other than to say they'll be along "as shortly as possible."

"This is an important part of our strategy. These devices have to be upgradeable, they have to be able to grow with you," Jha said.

The CLIQ's MotoBlur software may also get access to more social networking sites than its current Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, Jha said.

"We will extend that experience to various different other social domains. For the course of this year we will have much greater capability being delivered by Motoblur," he said.
