Sprint to launch 4G hotspots in 10 cities

Overdrive device enables PCs, smartphones, games consoles to connect to Internet via operator's mobile network.

As part of an effort to set itself apart from much larger competitors, Sprint Nextel Corp. announced a new device Wednesday that brings super high-speed wireless Internet service to as many as five devices.

Dubbed the "Overdrive," the product will be one of the first to offer so-called 4G wireless services.

Ten cities will be included in the launch area next week, with more slated to come on line later in the year. Sprint plans to market the device through a partnership with electronics retail chain Best Buy Co.

He expects about 120 million people to be covered by the end of the year."4G means four times the value," he said, calling the service "a revolution."

The Overdrive is a small black device that provides a high-speed Internet connection through Sprint's wireless networks. Up to five devices can access high-speed service through the product, including smartphones, PCs and high-end videogame consoles such as the Xbox 360 from Microsoft Corp., which is also acting as a partner for the device.

The overdrive will cost $99.99 with a two-year plan and rebate. Data service for the device will cost $60 per month, according to a Sprint representative.

Sprint has struggled to compete with large rivals AT&T Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc. In its most recent quarterly report, Sprint reported losing more than half-a-million subscribers, causing a wider-than-expected loss for the period.
