Taiwan market: Vibo offers own-brand Android smartphones

Taiwan-based 3G carrier Vibo Telecom has unveiled its first own-brand Android-powered smartphone, the A688, in the local market. Vibo outsources the production of the A668 to Foxconn International Holdings (FIH), the company noted.

Vibo expects the number of its 3G subscribers to increase from 1.54 million currently to two million by the end of 2010, with 10-15% of them using smartphones, said company president Feng-hsiung Chang.

The carrier also looks to expand its revenues to NT$12 billion (US$377.36 million) in 2010 compared to NT$7.3 billion in 2009.

Meanwhile, Vibo is also in talks with Gigabyte Communications and AboCom Systems for cooperation in the production of other Android-based smartphones, according to industry sources.
