Ericsson and Covage speed along french broadband rollout
* French operator Covage to complete its first deployment in Angoulême, France in July 2010
* Ericsson's EDA 1500 solution adopted – world's most advanced GPON platform for high-capacity all-IP fiber-optic networks
* The only solution that allows infrastructure to be shared between multiple service providers
Covage has selected Ericsson to roll out its high-speed fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure to local and regional governments and estate owners. Ericsson will provide Covage with active and passive equipment for its fiber-optic networks as well as associated operator support services.
Covage chose Ericsson to support the rollout of its shared FTTH networks after a rigorous selection process. Covage needed a solution that could carry TV signals using RF Overlay technology as well as supporting IP services with a high level of flexibility, in particular to ensure transparency of triple-play services from internet service providers (ISP).
Norbert Blanchard, Director of Operations at Covage, says: "We also needed a level of scalability that would accommodate an increase in bandwidth from 100Mbps to 1Gbps per subscriber without any modification of the infrastructure. We wanted to make it easy for users to choose their ISPs, or even subscribe to multiple providers at the same time. With this solution, subscribers can also change operators without requiring any intervention on the network."
The decision was also based on Ericsson's ability to deliver a complete end-to-end solution and provide the necessary support for rollout.
As an open access network operator, Covage acts as the single point of contact for local and regional governments and property management agencies. Initially focused on the enterprise market, Covage has now made its open access network available to residential users. The company has developed an innovative, ISP-agnostic FTTH solution based on the principle of shared infrastructure, which allows home users to choose the ISP they want and enables the ISPs to manage the services flexibly and transparently. This solution also meets the requirements of local and regional government agencies to offer a universal service for a maximum number of residential subscribers.
The first deployment is planned for a property management company in the city of Angoulême in south-west France in July 2010. The solution will ensure continuity of service and a seamless transition from analog television (via an outside aerial) to digital terrestrial television, with the video signal carried through to each individual residential unit. Covage's open-access FTTH network also allows the property management company to optimize the provision of electricity and water services.
The contract between the two companies calls for high-speed fixed network access and IP transport solutions.
"Covage's choice centers on the Ericsson EDA 1500 – the high-density all-IP GPON platform that efficiently manages fiber-optic networks and the traffic volumes associated with the explosion of broadband, IPTV and other multimedia services as well as enterprise services. The solution also comprises SmartEdge IP routers from Ericsson, which have already been adopted by several operators in France," says Franck Bouetard, President of Ericsson France.
In addition to the broadband infrastructure, Ericsson will provide associated support services in the areas of network architecture, engineering, rollout and technical assistance as well as training of Covage's technical teams.
