Orange launches charity scheme to benefit community in Monmout
Orange UK has launched its first local charity scheme in its Community store in Monmouth, Wales. This scheme will encourage consumers to recycle their old handsets – with 100% of the proceeds raised going to two local, charitable causes.
With an estimated 90 million* unused, old handsets in the UK and 33,000** in the wider Monmouth region, Orange believes this pilot scheme could make a real difference to the local community – as old handsets can be worth up to £280*** each. Orange is therefore encouraging everyone, whether they are an Orange customer or not, to come in to the local store to drop off their unwanted handsets – as every handset recycled will have a positive impact on two local causes.
All the money raised will go towards:
* Providing the young students at Trellech Primary School with high-tech teaching equipment
* Providing a new reception area for The Bridges Community Centre
Orange has deliberately chosen to launch this scheme in its Monmouth store as it has a unique focus on the community – with the homely store design encouraging consumers to drop by for a cup of coffee and a chat about their communication needs. Regular workshops are also hosted in store, while local news, activities and cultural events are posted on its notice board.
Lisa Perez, Store Manager at the Orange Monmouth Store, says: “We are excited to be launching Orange’s first local charity scheme – and given our store’s unique focus on community, we believe that Monmouth is the perfect location for such an offering.”
Stephen King, Head Teacher, Trellech Primary School, says: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Orange to raise money for high-tech teaching equipment for our young pupils – as we believe technology can be a real asset in the classroom.”
Mark Walton, The Bridges Community Centre, says: “Our Community Centre is extremely popular in Monmouth with many people dropping by every day. We are therefore delighted that Orange will be helping us to raise money for a new reception area, to make it as warm, welcoming and friendly as possible.”
This pilot builds on Orange’s wider UK charity scheme, called ‘Orange Community’, which encourages Orange employees to raise money for eight charities across the UK including Alzheimer’s Society, Barnardo’s, Crisis, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Groundwork, Leonard Cheshire, NSPCC and Samaritans.
If this pilot scheme is a success, then local charity schemes may be rolled out in other Orange retail stores across the UK.
