RIM reportedly looks to ship 60-70 million BlackBerry smartphones in next 12 months
RIM (Research In Motion) has reportedly informed its handset component suppliers in Taiwan that it expects shipments of BlackBerry smartphones to top 60-70 million units in the next 12 months, shrugging off the adverse impact from the launches of competing iPhone 4 and Android-based smartphones.
Some of RIM's suppliers in Taiwan include keypad maker Silitech Technology and PCB manufacturer Ichia Technologies. Sources from the Taiwan-based companies pointed out that they remain bullish on shipments to RIM, especially with the expected strong market reception for the new Blackberry OS 6.0. RIM has reportedly asked component suppliers to begin material preparations.
The impact from the iPhone 4 and Android devices is actually limited, since RIM still focuses on the enterprise market, the sources said, noting that RIM will likely be able to grab more business users as market share of the Windows camp continues to slip.
RIM, on June 24, 2010, announced that it shipped 11.2 million handsets in the fiscal first quarter ending in May. Revenues and profits jumped 24% and 20%, respectively, from a year earlier to US$4.24 billion and US$768.9 million in the period. Shipments came in the low end of the company's forecast and the market was looking for higher revenues.
