XPERIA™ X8 extends Sony Ericsson’s Android phone family

The new Sony Ericsson XPERIA™ X8 takes the best from the XPERIA™ X10 and X10 mini products into a new price point (under 200 Euro retail) that will give consumers a greater choice and attract a new audience for touch screen Android phones.

The phone features a 3 inch HVGA (320 x 480 pixels) capacitive touchscreen and the user interface is similar to that of the XPERIA™ X10 mini, with the four-corner controls that give easy one-handed use, and can be customised for one touch access to your favourite applications. A full QWERTY on-screen keyboard makes text entry simple and quick.

The XPERIA™ X8 also includes Timescape™ for easy access to all your social networking and the infinite button for one click access to a world of content.

Timo Maassmann, Product Marketing Manager for XPERIA™ X8, said, “We are delighted to be able to bring the full experience of our XPERIA™ smartphones to new consumers by delivering a fully featured device at a more accessible price point.”

In our Developer World YouTube video, Albin Olofsson introduces the XPERIA™ X8 and compares it with the other Android phones in the XPERIA™ range.

The XPERIA™ X8 features a 3 inch TFT HVGA (320 x 480 pixels) capacitive touchscreen (single touch) with 16 million color depth fast 600MHz Qualcomm processor, 128MB internal storage with additional storage via microSD™ card (2GB included; up to 16GB supported), a 3.2 megapixel camera with VGA video recording, Wi-Fi 802.11g and HSPA at 7.2Mbps download.

The XPERIA™ X8 will be available in selected markets from Q3 2010. The launch release of Android OS for the XPERIA™ X8 is still to be determined. It will either launch on Android 1.6 (Donut) with a subsequent upgrade to Android 2.1 a few weeks later or will launch on Android 2.1. The final decision will be taken on a market-by-market basis.
