Transport Ticketing Event Round-up

The wide array of transport ticketing options that are available were discussed, while insights into the unique challenges of the UK market were given.

The third Transport Ticketing event took place in London on January 26-27. An intimate affair, it was attended by 60 delegates from across the industry with developments in smart cards, contactless bank cards, e-ticketing and NFC all on the agenda.

The event provided some valuable insight into the state of UK transport ticketing, particularly in relation to the role of mobile in public transport ticketing. It was pointed out that all UK mobile tickets are app/browser and credit card-based. The issue of lack of coverage on the underground and this preventing mobile ticketing use on the network was also raised and it was agreed that if mobile operators intend to get involved in this area they will need to add coverage to these stations. The general consensus was that mobile messaging also remains a huge opportunity for the delivery of traffic information and notifications.

There was also a wealth of interesting comment on the transport market as a whole. The ITSO standard continues to receive government backing, but the industry has yet to fully embrace it. Interoperability is largely solved thanks to the fact 70% of train journeys begin or end in London, and TfL is fully interoperable. Oyster, London’s contactless payment system, now has new competitors from VISA Paywave and Mastercard whilst outside the country’s urban areas the market remains deregulated.

All in all, the event highlighted not just the wealth of ticketing options available, but the unique landscape of the UK’s public transport market. This will certainly be a market to pay close attention to in the coming months.
