IPX to Launch NFC Trusted Service Manager at WIMA in April
As NFC continues to generate interest, IPX plans to showcase access control and public transport ticketing applications using live networks.
At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year NFC proved to be one the hottest topics, not just for Ericsson IPX, but across the entire event. Whilst the technology has been around for many years, the lack of handsets and unclear business models has seen NFC fail to receive widespread adoption. Every year seems to have been touted as ‘the year of NFC’ but for the first time this may actually be true. While new products were thin on the ground, there were commitments from a wide array of players such as IPX, SIM card vendors, handset manufacturers and operators. Samsung, for instance, announced two new NFC-enabled phones and Google has now included NFC in the latest version of Android.
With this in mind and April’s WIMA event in Monaco fast approaching, IPX is planning two demos using its Trusted Service Manager (TSM) for the event to accompany its launch.
The first demo will showcase NFC as a tool for access control in a homecare situation, where the keys to premises are downloaded over the air via the IPX TSM. Operating in conjunction with Telcred, the demonstration will use a special NFC lock (which takes just 20 minutes to install) and allows access to a building using an NFC-enabled mobile phone. The demonstration will showcase how ‘keys’ to the homes of the elderly and infirm can be distributed to home carers, granting them access to their patients’ premises on predetermined days. In Sweden for instance, it is estimated that for each of the approximately 100,000 people working in the homecare industry, seven hours per week is spent collecting and returning keys from central offices. In this case, Ericsson IPX’s TSM will enable homecare professionals to become more efficient by replacing physical keys with remotely enabled NFC variants.
The second demo, in collaboration with Mikroelektronika, demonstrates the delivery of NFC tickets for public transport using the IPX TSM. Tickets can be selected and paid for using a top-up card and then distributed to a user’s phone where they can be used to board transport. Using their phone, consumers are then able to check their recent journeys and check how much credit for travel they have. Using this system, tickets can be bought in advance to save time and remove the need to carry cash for travel. Both demos will be operating on live commercial networks.
If you are planning to be at WIMA between 19th and 21st April, come by and take a look!
