MediaTek to slash handset solution prices in April, says paper

MediaTek is expected to implement a comprehensive price cut of its handset solutions on April 1, with quotes for its quad-core MT6589 solutions to be reduced by the highest rate of 10% from US$20 to US$18, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

MediaTek have landed orders for its MT6589 solutions from about 20 clients, including Lenovo, ZTE, Huawei, TCL, Gionee and Sony Mobile Communications, and those vendors will start rolling out an array of mobile devices powered by MT6589 chips in March-April, said the paper.

MediaTek aims to ramp up shipments of its quad-core solutions through price cuts, commented the paper, which added that the chipset vendor will also begin volume production of its low-cost quad-core version, the MT6589m, soon.
