Virtual gaming, developer awards & a look at Sony Square NYC

Friday’s back and once again we’re on hand to dish out the latest news from the world of Sony and Android. First up, we take a dive into the world of gaming. Sony’s PlayStation ™  VR headsetis now little over two months away from release and excitement is already really starting to set in. To give fans a teaser of what they can expect, this week a brand new trailer was released, showing all of the amazing new games that will be available to players at launch. They include Rigs, VR Worlds, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Super Stardust, Hustle Kings and Tumble VR.
The trailer promises to transport PlayStation users to a new world of unexpected gaming experiences, and it’s safe to say we cannot wait. In case you missed it, you can see the trailer here for yourself:
Next up, there was exciting news for the guys over at Developer World. This week, at the Hearing Loss Association of America convention 2016, Sony’s Entertainment Access Glasses received an innovation award! The award was for the product’s ability to display movie captions directly on the wearer’s field-of-view, improving the experiences of people with hearing loss, demonstrating another valuable use of AR technology.
If you haven’t heard of the product, the Entertainment Access Glasses are a predecessor to Sony’s SmartEyeglass ™  and make use of the same holographic technology to display captions directly on the lenses for natural unobstructed viewing. The glasses consist of the main eyewear module as well as a receiver that contains the capability to connect headphones, allowing for special audio tracks for the hearing impaired. A data transmitter cleverly uses a radio frequency to transmit data from a digital cinema server to the glasses’ receiver box, which can then provide the speakers with audio and the lenses with captions. Sounds cool, right?
Whilst it may seem like a long way off, this week Sony was well and truly getting into the festive spirit, promising to add a little sparkle to your Christmas. Premium gadgets, guaranteed to be the perfect presents, were shown off, including Sony’s colourful MDR-100ABN ‘h.ear on’ Wireless NC headphones, EXTRA BASS™ speakers, and  the DSC-RX100 IV compact camera, a perfect travel companion for all those who are planning to jet off during the festive period.
Alternatively, if you’re not quite ready to Christmas shop, then these products are definitely a great way to treat yourself.
Last but by no means least, a brand new feature has been welcomed to Sony’s New York City HQ – meet Sony Square NYC. It’s a ground-level look at Sony’s latest wide array of innovative gadgets, as well as providing hints at products that could shorty become a reality. The facility has been designed to be easily transformable, and features movable panels holding an exhibit of artwork all taken on Sony cameras. Hidden beneath the panels, there is an array of flat screen monitors display upcoming Sony movies, video games, music videos, and other media.
The front of the space showcases concept gear, learning, and innovation. For example, a voice-activated, neck-wearable music player from Sony’s Future Lab Program dubbed Concept N projects a cone of audio around the head when worn and includes a voice-activated camera. Sony introduced it at Wearable World Congress in May. You can’t buy it yet, but you can walk into the store and try it for yourself!
A second installation is meant to showcase the potential of the Internet of Things.
A series of tags can be connected via a simple drag-and-drop interface on a tablet to do stuff. It’s really simple stuff: just take a picture, control a light, play a sound, connect a device, and so on. It’s what we call Project Mesh. If you just happen to be in NYC, then make sure you take a look.
That’s all we have time for this week. Have a great weekend.
