Samsung Electronics to Expand South Korea’s IoT Ecosystem

Samsung Electronics is going to hold South Korea’s biggest technology competition to expand IoT ecosystem and IoT platform called ‘ARTIK’. Starting with domestic competition this year, Samsung Electronics is going to expand this competition globally starting from next year. Samsung Electronics has set a strategy to promote this event as a global event such as Microsoft’s Imagine Cup or a technology competition that is held by Google’s developers.
According to an industry on the 16th, Samsung Electronics is going to hold ‘IoT Innovation Challenge’ with KEA (Korea Electronics Association).
This event is held to establish an innovative business ecosystem based on IoT platform. Total prize will be $91,253 (100 million KRW) and this event will be South Korea’s biggest IT competition in South Korea’s history. Samsung Electronics is especially looking to expand ARTIK ecosystem by developing products and services through its IoT platform called ARTIK. Samsung Electronics introduced ARTIK at Samsung Developer Conference that was held in the U.S. last year and held a technology competition with a prize pool of $100,000.
Participants of this event will be teams that are comprised of college and graduate students from South Korean universities and general small and medium companies and start-up companies. This event will include all of industries such as Smart Home, healthcare, environment and energy, public and safety, finance and industry, and Smart Car.
Deadline for registration including planners of development will be the 25th of this month. Successful candidates will be announced after first evaluation. Participants that pass through first evaluation will go through preliminary education with ARTIK researchers from Samsung Electronics and KEA’s technical committees. This education is set up to support participants to utilize ARTIK even better.

After education is finished, participants need to submit their products and services after going through a month of development period. Second evaluation will be carried out on submitted results and will select final candidates. Products and services that are in final stage will be displayed at booths that are set up at KES (Korea Electronics Show), which opens on the 26th of October. Winners will be selected after going through evaluations from spectators on presented products and services and final presentations. 2 winning teams will be awarded $18,250 (20 million KRW) each and in total of $91,253 (100 million KRW) of prize.
Starting with this event this year, Samsung Electronics is looking for a way to expand this competition as a global competition. Samsung Electronics will include other Asian countries starting from next year and is looking to expand towards North America, Europe and other countries afterwards.
Global electronics and IT businesses are carrying out global events to expand their products, technical marketing, and partnerships. Microsoft is carrying out SW technology competition called ‘Imagine Cup’ by touring different countries since 2003. Google and Apple are carrying out I/O and WWDC respectively. Samsung Electronics is also looking to grow this event as a global event with Samsung Electronics’ own characteristics.
