Taiwan government to sign WiMAX cooperation pact with Clearwire
Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) is scheduled to sign on December 17 a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with US-based WiMAX operator Clearwire for cooperation in the WiMAX industry, according to sources at MOEA.
In addition to Clearwire, the MOEA has already signed cooperation memoranda with a number of WiMAX solution and service providers, including Intel, Sprint Nextel, Alcatel-Lucent, Nortel Networks, Nokia Siemens Networks, Motorola, Rohde & Schwarz and Starent Networks.
While Intel, Alcatel-Lucent, Nortel and Motorola have established IOT (interoperability testing) centers for WiMAX products in Taiwan, Rohde & Schwarz and Starent are also expected to commit such investments on the island in 2009, the sources noted.
At least six Taiwan-based network equipment makers have begun volume shipments of WiMAX products, and some of them are expected to boost their shipments of WiMAX products to 30,000-50,000 units, or even 100,000 units, a month in 2009, the sources estimated.
Taiwan-based PC vendors and makers, including Acer, Asustek Computer, Quanta Computer and Compal Electronics, have also voiced their support for the advancement of the WiMAX industry in Taiwan, the sources noted.
