VAMOS doubles voice capacity in GSM without further hardware investment

The worldwide success of GSM/EDGE continues with steady subscriber growth rate. Consequently, telecom operators have expressed the need to increase spectrum utilization of GSM voice services and improve the hardware efficiency of network equipment. VAMOS will relieve the pressure on GSM networks by doubling GSM transceiver peak capacity, while being backwards compatible with both network and mobile equipment.

As VAMOS doubles the GSM transceiver peak capacity by supporting up to four voice users on a single radio resource it optimizes spectrum utilization, and reduces radio base station power consumption. Moreover, it will help reduce radio base station footprint. Hence, it will lessen the environmental impact of the GSM system while ensuring competitiveness and profitability for GSM operators. The introduction of a new downlink modulation, Adaptive QPSK, and the VAMOS Subchannel Power Control feature, together with advanced radio base station receiver algorithms, ensure VAMOS is fully backward compatible with network and mobile equipment.
