Wi-Fi Only Sony Xperia Z Ultra Resurfaces, Intended As A “Mini” Tablet?
Following the CES unveiling, every Sony fan set his or her eyes on the Xperia Z1 Compact. The handset offers high-end specifications in a “compact” body that delivers a 4.3 inch display. That’s a rare thing nowadays – a small smartphone boasting top-tier internals, so the Z1 Compact has its appeal. But, at the very opposite end, Sony also boasts one of the most powerful phablets around – the Xperia Z Ultra. The handset in question has been released in the later part of 2013, and probably most enthusiasts have already made up their mind regarding this particular device. The conclusion: it’s either too big, or it’s actually the perfect phablet. But what about those who think the Xperia Z Ultra is the ideal device, except for its price? Well, Sony might have the answer, as a Wi-Fi Only variant could hit the shelves sometime in the future. More details below.

Back in November, a mysterious Z Ultra variant limited to Wi-Fi Only connectivity has beenspotted at the FCC. We haven’t heard much about the device since, but earlier today the gadget in question made an appearance in AnTuTu – the popular benchmark for mobile devices.
Spec-wise, the Wi-Fi Only Z Ultra is pretty much the same as its LTE brethren, except of course for the fact that it lacks a few radios. It boasts a 6.44 inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x1920, a Snapdragon 800 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box and an 8-2 MP camera combo.
The price is not mentioned in the benchmark, obviously, but as we all know, a Wi-Fi Only device usually costs less than a LTE-equipped counterpart. It might seem far-fetched for a smartphone to be Wi-Fi Only, but truth be told, if any device can achieve this, then it’s definitely the Xperia Z Ultra. Most people haven’t considered this handset a real smartphone in the first place. Even Sony avoided showcasing this device held at one’s ear in its commercials, mainly because it’s almost as large as a Nexus 7.
