2007 is now behind us and Jens Greve, Head of Sony Ericsson Developer World, shares his thoughts on the past and his excitement about the plans for 2008.
2007 was a great year for Sony Ericsson as we sold more phones than ever before – over 100 million globally. As Sony Ericsson continues to grow, so does Sony Ericsson Developer World. In 2007, I was excited to welcome developers from 200 countries to our web portal and our developer services were used more than ever.
Let me recap a few highlights from 2007 from a Sony Ericsson Developer World perspective.
Developer resources in Chinese
China is one of the world's most dynamic mobile markets with over 530 million mobile subscribers, and mobile content and applications are playing an increasingly important role. That's why we launched Sony Ericsson Developer World China in May 2007, offering localized developer support and services in the Chinese language.

We have seen fantastic growth in the number of visitors from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan using our Chinese-language web section. Here you will find moderated discussion forums, Docs & Tools for download, news articles and newsletter subscription, an RSS feed and Go-to-market information.
"The Chinese web section is a comprehensive communication platform for content and application development for the Chinese market and building this ecosystem during 2007 has allowed us to establish relationships with key business partners and community developers.

Java Platform 8 (JP-8) and first with Mobile Services Architecture (MSA)
We also expanded the Sony Ericsson Java™ Platform strategy by introducing Java Platform 8 (JP-8) and being first to announce a phone – the Z750 - supporting Mobile Services Architecture (MSA), the next-generation Java umbrella standard (JSR 248). A strong Java Platform remains central to Sony Ericsson's strategy and by the end of 2007 we had announced seven phone models supporting JP-8 and further increased the number of phone series supporting JP-7 to 18.
Stronger UIQ 3 platform
During 2007 we also continued to show our commitment to UIQ. Not only did we launch two new exciting UIQ 3-based phones, the Sony Ericsson P1 smartphone and the W960 Walkman and completed the acquisition of UIQ Technologies, we also agreed with Motorola to take a 50% share of UI Holdings BV, the parent company of UIQ Technology, and work together and jointly invest in the development of the UIQ Open User Interface platform.
Sony Ericsson also initiated and sponsored the new "UIQ 3: The Complete Guide" which aims to be the most comprehensive guide available for developing UIQ 3 applications. I felt strongly that we had to publish both a printed and an online version of the book - the Wiki format is available on UIQ Technology's Developer Community website. I am looking forward to further developing this type of resource together with you during 2008.
Themes Creator and Adobe® Device Central
Our most popular tool is the Themes Creator and it is now available in Linux format, in addition to Windows and OS X, and all three versions are now also available in Chinese. In 2007 we also included Sony Ericsson mobile phones in Adobe's Device Central CS3 service enabling creative professionals and developers to easily design engaging mobile phone content in Adobe® Flash Lite™.
Sony Ericsson Content Awards
I am also excited that 2007 saw the launch of the first ever Sony Ericsson Content Awards with the winners announced in an online ceremony in December 2007.
This is our way to celebrate our global development partners who have done and continue to do outstanding work in advancing the experiences that end-users have on their Sony Ericsson mobile phones.
Developer Web portal
In 2007, we also added new services to the Developer World web portal for registered Community members. This included the launch of the navigation dashboard for members to create a personalized information bar that travels with them wherever they go on the Developer World web site, and the introduction of the Virtual Lab providing online and remote access to Sony Ericsson phones for real-time testing.

In addition to new functionality, we also introduced Blueprints to offer you more complete sample code, developer tutorials on various topics and Wiki competitions. We continued to expand the Mobile Music resource section which supports application development for the 145 million Sony Ericsson music-enabled phones sold to date, of which 57 million are branded mobile Walkman®.

We have great plans for 2008 and I can promise you that the entire Sony Ericsson Developer World team remains committed to supporting you and your development.
