Vibo in talks with ZTE and Gigabyte Communications for customized 3G handsets
Taiwan-based 3G operator Vibo Telecom is currently in talks with a number of handset makers, including China-based ZTE and Taiwan-based Gigabyte Communications, for the production of customized 3G handsets, according to company president Feng-Hsiung Chang.
The carrier earlier said that it plans to purchase about 500,000 customized handsets in 2008.
Chang said that Vibo is also negotiating with its associate company, WiMAX Telecom, about the possibility of combining Vibo's 3G services and WiMAX Telecom's forthcoming WiMAX services.
Vibo has ordered a number of 3.5G data cards from ZTE and the company may launch its own 3.5G service at 3.6Mbps in the third quarter of this year if Vibo and WiMAX Telecom cannot jointly launch a 3.5G service on time, said market sources.
