TSMC and Spreadtrum developing 65nm handset chips

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is working with Spreadtrum Communications, one of China's leading wireless baseband chipset providers, to develop 65nm handset chips, according to Spreadtrum president Ping Wu.

Wu made the revelation at Spreadtrum's technology forum taking place between June 17-18.

Industry observers said TSMC and Spreadtrum have been working very closely and Spreadtrum is one of TSMC's most important clients in China. Both sides are also planning further collaboration for 45nm and 32nm technologies, the observers said.

Ying Cheng Chao, general manager of TSMC's operations in China, who also attended the forum, said the foundry's collaboration with Spreadtrum is long-term.

He said he believes that the TD-SCDMA standard China is developing will eventually be a success, but during commercialization of the standard, it will also have to target the global market. He said the global handset chip market is growing at a pace of 20% annually, which offers huge business opportunities.

Chao said, in the past, a single handset could feature 10-20 chips, but the number has been cut down to about five – baseband, RF, display, power management, and flash memory – because of integration.

However, the number of chips has begun to increase again in recent years because more functions are featured in handsets, he pointed out, although this will decrease again in the future because of further integration, he added.
