Nokia inaugurates its plant in Cluj, Romania

Today Mr Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, Prime Minister of Romania, inaugurated Nokia’s new mobile device plant in Jucu, near the city of Cluj, Romania, together with Mr Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Markets, Nokia.

“Romania has highly dedicated people and I am pleased to announce that the factory is expected to reach the milestone of 10 million devices during October. The Cluj operations have become an integral part of our global demand supply network,” said Mr Vanjoki. “Nokia has 10 production plants in nine countries around the world, and this global presence enables us to quickly respond to customer needs,” he added.

Nokia’s decision concerning the EUR 60 million greenfield investment in Romania was announced in March 2007 and construction began in July 2007. The factory became operational in record time, with the first device produced there in February 2008. Currently the factory employs over 1 600 people and the total number of employees is expected to reach 3 500 by the end of 2009. The total area of the new factory is 34 000 square meters.

Nokia is one of the most important investors in Romania in the telecommunications sector today. Altogether Nokia currently employs around 1 800 people in its factory in Jucu, services and software unit in Cluj and sales office in Bucharest.
